What are some of the most important parts of our body - The brain? The heart?
What about the spinal cord discs stacked up our spine that keep us moving pain free?
This squishy ‘toy’ is a perfect model of a spinal cord disc.
This workshop looks beyond the typical biological systems children learn. Instead, we focus on the structural properties of a spinal cord disc by making squishies, learning how these properties play into its ‘shock absorbing’ function.
Concepts: Health and disease, spinal cord structure, modelling biology.
Skills: Following procedure, ratios and measurements, abstract thinking.

Ever wanted to build an army of mechanical bugs to do your bidding?
Children design courses for these mechanical mozzies to take them from point A to point B.
Much more difficult than you think, these bugs are uncontrollable.
Concepts: robotics, mechanics. Skills: problem solving, predicting outcomes.
It’s handy to know how to design a trebuchet if you plan on laying siege to a castle in the future.
This timeless piece of technology works by utilising Newtons laws of motion, converting potential energy into kinetic energy to launch whatever you wish across the room.
Children will engineer their own trebuchet, modifying it to create the optimal launch of an unfortunate plastic bear.
Concepts: Physics, engineering, laws of motion. Skills: Problem solving, evaluative optimization, practical building.

Bath Bombs: The science behind the fizz
Get an early start to chemical cosmetics with this workshop. Lab work isn’t just about making new medicines. In fact, an enormous amount of lab work went into creating the shampoo you use.
Children get hands-on experience making their very own deliciously scented bath bombs. Not only do they follow a scientific procedure to make them, but they also understand why they fizz when they come into contact with water.
If you’re a parent reading this – you’ll be getting your child to make more.
Concepts: acid/base reactions, CO2 production, scientific protocol, chemical hazards. Skills: Using chemicals safely, measuring and ratios, following scientific procedure.

Oobleck
It’s probably better to learn about non-Newtonian fluids by making Oobleck rather than being stuck in quicksand.
Children make oobleck and investigates states of matter – discovering what happens when a fluid doesn’t quite follow the rules.
Indi Spheros
Do traffic lights turn green by someone pressing a button? Does someone open the door at a big supermarket for you?
Of course not. These things are automated by programmers, and automation is growing more complex and intelligent every day. Indi Sphero’s are joyful colour-sensing robot cars. The children’s task is to figure out which colours program the Sphero’s to do what action – using this to solve various mazes and puzzles, or even race.
Car building
Researchers have developed engineering that allows vehicles to navigate tricky terrain. There’re caterpillar treads on tanks, spanning to intelligent AI assisted suspension systems on the Mars Rover.
There’s one aim in this workshop. Build a car that can move from A to B, tackling different assault courses and obstacles. How it’s done is all up to you.
